This new writing journey…

Updated: Jul 11, 2025

As I set out to complete my second book, I can’t help but look back at the challenges I faced while writing the first one 11 years ago. The journey was filled with hurdles like self-doubt, writer’s block, and an unyielding quest for perfection. Even though these experiences were tough, they taught me lessons that are now invaluable. This time, the thrill of weaving through my life's story is intertwined with the understanding that fresh challenges await.

The adventure of writing is seldom a straightforward path. Each book calls for personal growth, determination, and most importantly, patience. With this second effort, I am not just illuminating my story, one that many of us share; I am also testing my faith and resilience.

Embracing the Journey

Writing may seem like a lone endeavor, but it is a rich journey that allows us to explore our imagination and ourselves. Each word unfolds a tapestry of emotions and landscapes that must be navigated. Moreover, this process requires a willingness to embrace both vulnerability and uncertainty.

During this new phase, I have accumulated insights I lacked when I began my first book. For example, I discovered that stepping away from the keyboard can be incredibly helpful. When I give myself permission to take a break, ideas often flow more freely afterward. I've learned that creativity can strike unexpectedly by listening to a sermon, enjoying a quiet moment, and yes, playing an online video game.

These new perspectives and approaches have revitalized my writing. The anticipation of what each page will reveal urges me to dig deeper into my complexities, feelings, and my relationship with God. With each lesson I develop a greater sense of myself and a level of empowerment that was missing in the original book.

The Challenge of New Roots

Nevertheless, excitement often comes with substantial challenges. Writing a second book means setting ambitious goals while juggling my personal and professional life. My time feels more precious, pushing me to manage my schedule more astutely. I not only work full time, but I am most importantly a husband and a father, both of which require commitment, intentionality, and time. I am also in college, prayerful to earn my doctorate by 2028. Although not as much as I use to due to school, I also teach whenever I can, something that I am very passionate about.

When it comes to this new book, on some days I enjoy a creative flow that feels natural and joyful. On others, I grapple with frustration and self-doubt. This mix keeps me grounded, aa creativity isn’t always neat and tidy. Every setback provides a chance to reassess my approach and try new strategies. Establishing a writing routine that fits my life while boosting productivity has been an enlightening experience. It often feels like a balancing act, where I strive to remain committed yet flexible in my approach.

Test of Self-Confidence and Patience

Among the numerous hurdles, the most significant are the tests of self-confidence and patience. I sometimes question whether my story has enough depth or whether I am able to convey my feelings in a manner that accentuates my love for God, and as a result, my love for people. The fear of not living up to expectations—both my own and those of readers—can be intimidating. Yet, I remind myself that every accomplished writer has faced similar doubts. As a matter of fact, anyone who has ever achieved success in their respective field has encountered similar emotions and apprehensions.

To conquer these challenges, I have turned to practices that help cultivate patience through reading the Bible, prayer and meditation, and journaling. Reflecting on my journey in the quiet space of a journal can help eliminate distractions and reestablish my core vision. This self-reflection helps nurture my trust in God and then in the abilities He blessed me with. It reminds me that this journey is as much a personal evolution as it is about the final product.

Stretching Beyond Comfort Zones

Writing this second book is pushing me to grow in ways I never imagined. Each chapter reveals aspects of the craft I want to refine, offering knowledge I didn’t realize I needed. More importantly, I am learning to embrace the discomfort that often accompanies growth and creativity. Though challenging, pushing beyond my familiar boundaries not only enhances my writing but also broadens my understanding of the narrative I want to share.

Without question I am proud of the original manuscript I created; however, my experiences in the 11 years since that writing have given me more insight, strengthened my faith, and furthered my love for God and others. Yes, the concepts of that book were and remain crucial to my journey and walk as an individual, especially having been someone who had people doubt him as an adolescent. Nevertheless, this new writing demonstrates greater vulnerability distinct from the first that is crucial to helping others navigate their own life obstacles.

Moving Forward with Purpose

Each lesson learned, along with moments filled with both excitement and uncertainty, signifies my commitment to this craft. This new season in my life is bright and revealing, reminding me that every word I write is an exploration of life, purpose, and connection to God.

The path may be filled with challenges; however, fueled by perseverance and guided by faith, the art of telling my story remains a source of inspiration. As I complete the final pages and prepare for the next phase of getting it published, it has been and remains evident that this new season will be different from the first. And it is my greatest honor to share this journey with you.
